THE CHILDREN
GROWING UP IN THE TOWNSHIPS
At Jbay surf house, we believe that every child should have joy in their life and a chance to dream. In the townships of Jeffreys Bay in South Africa, this is not always the case. Jeffreys Bay, loved by tourists because of the surf culture and world-famous wave Supertubes, holds a lot of inequality. Most children do not go to school, because their parents can‘t afford this. Therefore, due to a lack of school and activities, a lot of children wander around the streets of the townships all day.
CREATING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
We aim to make these children‘s day a little more enjoyable and their lifes a little better. Our main goal is to create a safe environment, where these children can go when needed, where they can play together, learn, share and of course surf together. Hopefully, this will give these kids some perspective on life, and a chance for them to dream as well.
MORE THAN SURFING
By offering these kids free surf lessons on multiple occations throughout the week,
we teach them so much more than just surfing:
With JBay surfhouse we aim to create an environment where the kids are seen, appreciated and encouraged to believe in themselves.
By playing together and surfing together, the kids learn the importance of teamwork. Social skills are taught; they learn how to share, how to encourage eachother, and friendships get made.
Of course, surfing is a physical activity which is good for the body, but is has also been proven, that being out in the ocean on your board is helpful for the mental state of mind. We also learn the kids to cope with stress and become more mindful.
